What to Do If a Relative Dies in a Foreign Country, such as Hungary?

international funeral assistance

1. Contacting the Consulate

In most cases, the consulate will notify the next of kin about the death.

If you learn of the tragedy first, report the death of the relative to the consulate’s hotline in the country where the death occurred.

Prepare the following information:

  • the deceased’s full name,

  • date of birth,

  • address,

  • passport number (if the deceased was travelling abroad),

  • information about the closest relatives.

Important: The consulate can assist by recommending an international funeral service provider in the respective country. It is worth asking if they recommend Antea’s services! We are confident you will receive a reassuring answer.

2. Hiring a Funeral Service Provider

If you choose us, we recommend that after consulting with the consulate, you contact our colleagues as soon as possible

Our colleagues are available 24/7, and speak multiple languages. At this point, we will ask questions necessary to prepare the quote and will respond with the details via email shortly.

3. Notifying the Insurance Company

If the deceased had insurance, notify the insurance company!

Some insurance policies cover the cost of repatriation, so it is worth checking the terms and conditions.

Each country has its own specific laws that determine how to handle deaths occurring abroad. Generally, local laws must be followed, which can be complicated for those unfamiliar with the legal system and language of the country.

Who is responsible for arranging the repatriation of the deceased?

Transportation is usually carried out by the funeral company appointed by the relatives.

Unfortunately, it happens that a truck driver is involved in a fatal traffic accident on a foreign, possibly Hungarian motorway. In such cases, it is advisable to contact the employer as soon as possible.

If it was a work-related accident or the death occurred while on assignment, it is typical for the deceased’s employer or insurance company to handle the repatriation.

How much does it cost to repatriate a deceased person from abroad?

The cost of international repatriation depends on many factors.

The price is influenced by:

  • the mode of transport (air or road),

  • the distance,

  • whether the remains are transported in a coffin or an urn,

  • religious requirements,

  • specific requirements of local regulations,

  • the timing of the funeral.

The costs of international repatriation can be significant, which is why it is particularly important for us that all costs are known in advance, and that we can provide a detailed and clear quote as quickly as possible.

How long does it take to repatriate a body?

Repatriation depends on several factors beyond control. For example, it can take several days for the foreign authorities to issue the necessary repatriation documents, such as the death certificate or the passport for the deceased (death certificate).

Is it possible for family members to accompany the body during transport?

We have extensive experience in organising flights from anywhere in the world. Antea can arrange for a relative to travel on the same flight as the deceased’s coffin in case of air transport.
